Just the facts, ma'am

Hello everyone, just thought I'd start Porters blog with the basics. His name, of course, is Porter Glenn Adams and he was born at 8:40 p.m. on August 27th, 2008. He weighed in at 8 lbs, 4 oz. and was delivered at Northwest Hospital in Seattle, WA with no complications.

A few problem did arise on the second day. His bilirubin count was elevated, indicating jaundice. Days later we had to rush him to Children's Hospital because the bilirubin count had skyrocketed to 27 - dangerous territory. After an overnight stay under UV lights, the bili levels fell to acceptable levels and we took him home.

The good times were not to last, however. It turns out that Porter suffered from "breast milk jaundice", a rare form that results from mothers breast milk inhibiting his ability to process bilirubin. Porters levels rose again, but this time we were allowed to keep him at home under portable UV lights. In addition we stopped breast feeding for 5 days and switched to formula. Let me tell you, nothing plays havoc with an infants digestive track like this switch. He went from pooping every hour and a half to once a day - he was not amused.

Fortunately our child care provider is excellent and Porter is now doing just fine. Last check up, at 9 weeks, put him at 13 lbs and 23 inches long - right in the 50% for his age!

I'll try to keep this page updated so everyone who is interested (everyone is as interested as I am, right?) can see his progress. I'm sure Grandpa D and Grandma S are looking down from above!
